How to get well water tested in East Texas

If you own a private well, you are responsible for testing it. TCEQ recommends using an accredited drinking water lab. (TCEQ)

Bacteria test: the six steps TCEQ gives

  1. Pick a lab and contact it. See labs in and near East Texas.
  2. Get a sterile container and sampling form from the lab.
  3. Collect the sample.
  4. Get it to the lab fast. It must be tested within 30 hours of collection.
  5. Read the report. Results usually take two to three days.
  6. Act on the results. If total coliform or E. coli is present, TCEQ says do not use the water for drinking, cooking, bathing, making ice or washing dishes until it is fixed.

What it costs

The Texas Water Development Board says costs range from about $20 for a coliform and E. coli presence test up to $400 for a full drinking water standards analysis. Some groundwater conservation districts test for free or at reduced cost; check the TWDB page for its GCD index. Always call labs to confirm prices.
